Since mid-2023, my long-term collaborator Delena Bradley had mentioned wanting to do a play that somehow was about fungi. She and I had worked on two shows about trees, and when we met Minerva Villa, the idea began to take momentum (i.e. they were excited and I trusted them, even though I wasn’t super connected with fungi).
When GHFT invited me to come on board, it was one of the projects I brought along because it was already in motion, and Gricelda and Caroline were pretty curious about what this fungal play might look like. Several grant applications later, 12+ weeks of group devising and an uncountable amount of research hours later, here we are!
In November 2025, we presented a work in progress of the show at the Rude Mechanicals’ CRASHBOX, that ran about 45 minutes.
I have loved experimental work and new work, but nothing could have prepared me for how much this process would stretch me as a director and maker. There’s lots of puns to be made about it, but it’s been an area to blend my Guatemalan background with fungi, and an exploration of grief and family.
Can’t wait to share the full piece!
